Wayne, Indiana Oh Great One !! Paul, the bookseller, sends his regards. Got the PP 1175 manual, no requests yet. Will put an extra copy in the back for you, + a $ 3 check to cover your postage. Got a manual to sell / loan on the RT 834 / GRC 106 ? Ft. Wayne, Indiana Hamfest Held each year in mid November, with 1100 tables and an attendance of 7000 over 2 days, this is one of the Midwest's biggest. Unfortunately, for us Military collector types, it's not a good one. Seen this year - GRC 106, ( bought by me ), 2 - PRC 25's, started at $ 300, went down to $ 200, unsold. BC 1206, very good shape, sold at $ 10. R 392, good condition, $ 200, unsold. Same, fair condition, $ 180, unsold. R 1051B ,$ 285, unsold. BC ( ugh ) 645, " Transmitter from a P-51. Make me an offer." No offers. John, KB0UPL, From Dubuque, bought a nice Navy 2 - 32 Mc. late SS design receiver, nixie readout, $ 125. That's about what I remember. Not much for 1100 tables. There was a "dealer ?" there with a large table full. Stuff in poor condition, dirty, missing parts, broken corners, etc. Typical prices were : PRC 10, with 1 antenna ( short ), handset, $ 90. Stupid statement -" I can get $ 125 for these at a mil. vehicle show" Then why are you here ? No noticeable Mil. collectors there. Met Jim Kralow, KA8TUR, Michigan ( he had the GRC 106 ) and, as mentioned, John Richardson, KB0UPL had a table there. I'm sure Hue is right, though the RAX-1 installation is well documented in a PB4Y-2 NTSch Line Maintenance manual from NAS Minneapolis, whose photos I have just completed putting on CD for him. 'Course, it *also* has an ARB and ATB mounted behind the ART-13 and RAX-1 sets - go figure... Just not sure how many they made of the aircraft, which was intended for ECM work in the Pacific the last year of the war...probably not more than a dozen or so. That ELINT role seems consistent with a receiver series that had an upper freq range significantly above the 9 or 18Mc capability of the available companion transmitters. That's not the end of the ART-13 companion receivers, though. The Navy did a lot of "experimental" work back then, and I have a low volume production Autotune 3-6Mc ARC-5 receiver in my ARC-5 bay, which according to my ARMN was slaved to the first 6 channels of the ART-13 control box for use as the liason receiver! Fred Raper claims they were used in the Western Pacific, and this C-131/AR autotune unit (mounted as an add-on to the front of the R-26) has an OH date of July 1951, so it saw service for some time after the end of the war. No particular aircraft mentioned in the ARMN, but not bad performance for such a little box as the R-26... I'm sure there are other receivers which were used with the ART-13 in airborne installations, but that covers the ones I have documentation for. 73, Mike I had thot to mention the R-26M / ARC-5, but i wasn't sure enuff to. this is an interesting association. I wish i had kept one of these, i liked their appearance a whole lot, for some reason. Somewhere i have a 'manual' on the 'conversion' procedure, from R-26 to the 'M' motorized version. So, to this point we have, as ART-13 associated receivers, ARB RAX BC-348 R-26M / ARC-5 R-105 / ARR-15 R-648 / ARR-41 that should about do it! great work, men! forward, into the past! And as for the pairing with the RAX, per the Coast Guard* history, this was a test setup, so i would think this was probably only the one aircraft. Mike's mention of such installation in ELINT planes around Japan, i would think a dozen would be very liberal, my guess would be some what less than this. In any case, we see this pairing was in the very low numbers. *I like the English empire's terminology better: Coast Guards Hue ed)Shit! All this from one simple little omission. Maybe I should do that more often! I would think that the combo ARB/ATB was mounted in the same aircraft as an ART-13 and RAX because it was used as the command radio, while the ART-13/RAX was the liaison set. I might again take this opportunity to plug the Navy's equipment here, the first ART-13(ATC) was ordered from Collins by the Navy in 1939 at a cost of $14,000(big bucks even by today's standards). Not just in aircraft It also saw service aboard ships(ATZ), on shore stations & in vehicular installations(MRC-20 & MRC-35 both Jeeps). At the same time what did the Signal Corps have? The BC-191/375 Ugg! It would not be until late war that the Army would use the set, then in their new B-29 which would be the only Army aircraft to use the radio during the war. True, ART-13's were delivered to Army Air Corps units, at least in North Africa to be retrofit into B-17's & B-24's, but the war ended within day's of their arrival and they remained in their crates. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More MBF, Hi Dennis, I just picked up an MBF in nice condition which an elderly Ham had used on MARS for many years. It has a history with it (used on a Victory ship, the SS Blue Ridge - anybody have information on this vessel?) and an orig. schematic diagram. One minor correction to the comments you made however: It was usable on 115 AC or DC, which is not such a surprise in that many ships entering WWII still used DC on the mains, but the interesting thing is the circuitry. It uses an automatic polarity switch using relays downstream from rectifier tubes and is, as you would expect, transformerless. Pretty neat considering the relatively few Collins examples of transformerless transmitters. Charles Charles E. Lamb WD4KZK ed) Your gettin me ta wantin! I already got enough wants! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Civie TA-312 Use, I know that everyone else knows it, but it was a epiphany for me. by taking the batteries out of a TA-312, placing the switch in CB the field phone will work as a regular telephone ( like the one on your desk ). With the addition of a TA-955/G touch tone adaptor kit you can dial out over local telephone circuits ( the kit has a flap that covers the crank too ). Have bin using one for over a week now out in the workshop and it works fine, always trying to find new ways to use green stuff. TA-955 adaptor kits are available prices range from $5.00(hamfest) to $28.00(retail). Ray Fantini ed) I've been using mine that way for about a year, in the shop, & on a line in the yard. I like it because it makes plenty of noise and I'm almost completely deaf. Even if I can't hear the things ring, they shake the ground enough that I can feal their vibration with my feet. Don't have a tone kit though, I couldn't justify the expense. A nice feature for the deviate, if you crank it's generator while wired to your phone system, it will ring all the other phones in your house driving family members nuts. I'd like to know how to make an EE-8 and a Model 1917 work on standard phone lines? *********************************************** DESPERATE FOR TBX STUFF; I am in the process of restoring a TBX-2 and need the following: Generator power cable - GG-49044A Headset / cable - CTE-49016 / CG-49012A / CM)-49104 Antenna - whip Antenna lead in (five feet) Mast sections - CFM-66019 / CFM-66020 / CFM-66021 / CFM-66022 Base support - CFM-66023 Ground stake - CFM-66024 Canvas case - CSK-10029A Antenna - wire Wound on reel CG-71007 Canvas case - CSK-10027A (need two - one for TBX and one for accessory case) 73 Joseph W Pinner Lafayette, LA KC5IJD EMail: kc5ijd@sprintmail.com ed0 Me too! As you are aware, ships have long been characterized as being female (e.g., "Steady as she goes" or "She's listing to starboard,Captain!"). Recently, a group of computer scientists (all males) announced that computers should also be referred to as being female. Their reasons for drawing this conclusion follow: Five reasons to believe computers are female: 1. No one but the Creator understands their internal logic. 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. 3. The message "Bad command or file name" is about as informative as, "If you don't know why I'm mad at you, then I'm certainly not going to tell you." 4. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval. 5. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it. However, another group of computer scientists (all female) think that computers should be referred to as if they were male. Their reasons follow: Five reasons to believe computers are male: 1. They have a lot of data, but are still clueless. 2. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem. 3. As soon as you commit to one you realize that, if you had waited a little longer, you could have obtained a better model. 4. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on. 5. Big power surges knock them out for the rest of the night. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A man was walking one day, when he came to this big house in a nice neighborhood. Suddenly he realized there was a couple making love out on the lawn. Then he noticed another couple over behind a tree. Then another couple behind some bushes by the house. He walked up to the door of the house, and knocked. A well dressed woman answered the door, and the man asked what kind of a place this was. "This is a brothel" replied the madam. "Well, what's all this out on the lawn?" queried the man. "Oh, we're having a yard sale today." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An elderly woman entered a large furniture store and was greeted by a much younger salesman. "Is there something in particular I can show you?" he asked. "Yes, I want to buy a sexual sofa." "You mean a sectional sofa," he suggested. "Sectional schmectional." she bitterly retorted. "All I want is an occasional piece in the living room!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Did you hear who Hillary is inviting to spend the night at the White House? I was only trying to keep my campaign promise by putting more women on my staff. With all his activities in the White House, Clinton gives new meaning to the term "domestic tranquility." What's the difference between the Watergate and the Zippergate ? The first scandal involved all the President's Men. The second scandal involved all the President's Women. I'm making a contribution to Clinton's defense fund . . . "Free Willy's Willy" Did you hear why the IRS wants to audit Monica? To see if she claimed the money she saved while eating at Bill's. The great benefit that Clinton has seen from Zippergate is that it has taken away the stigma of being the most anti-military president in history. After all, none of his predecessors has gone to such great lengths to have his privates on display. Who got the most pleasure out of Monica & Clinton's affair? Newt Gingrich Reagan, Nixon and Clinton are on the Titanic. The ship hits the iceberg and everybody starts screaming, panicking etc. Reagan shouts: "Women and children first."
