MILITARY COLLECTOR GROUP POST, FEB.17/98 INDEX: OFF THE SHELF PRICK's; PART IV, PRC-94 by Dennis Starks MEMBERS WRITE; FREE TO GOOD HOME; Heathkit & Eico manuals BOB NEEDS A COUPLE MANUALS; ON THE COMMERCIAL FRONT; HUMOR; *********************************************** OFF THE SHELF PRICK's; PART IV, PRC-94 by Dennis Starks PRC-94V; Handheld VHF, FM transceiver. Adoption of the commercial Comco model series 802(Repco 10-8). It has very similar cosmetics & electronics to the PRC-91A, with the added provision for an external speaker/mic. Intended as a general purpose radio, it is known to have been used by security personnel(Airforce & Navy), flight deck control operations (Navy), & for VHF Marine Band(US Coast Guard). Ops 150-174mc, xtal control, with an optional capacity of up to 5 channels. RF power output is 2.2 watts(standard), 4 watts(optional). Coast Guard Sets are 2.2 watt with provisions for low power operation (1 watt). Requires 12-15v normally supplied by a detachable nicad battery, a "AA"battery box can also be used. Accessories include telescoping 1/4 wave or 6" rubber antennas, speakermic, leather carry case, desk top or vehicular chargers. Circa 1975-1985. Special note, the PRC-94 series of radios has been marketed by numerous commercial firms including EF Johnson (Comco mod series 802), Repco(model series 10-8), RCA, & others. Most of these firms have been used as sources for PRC-94 variants. All of these radios were actually built by Repco, & are cosmetically identical. Ref.#11,#23,#28 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- PRC-94V1; The commercial equivalents for this PRC-94 variant are COMCO 810-156-01, & RCA 8TNIH11R. Ops 132-150.8mc, with one Xtal control channel, & an output power of 2.2 watts. It was factory supplied with rechargeable nicad batteries. For other possible variants see PRC-94. Original US Navy & Marine Corps cost $1210.00. NSN 5820-01-012-2770. Ref.#28,#30 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- PRC-94V2; The commercial equivalent for this PRC-94 variant is the RCA 8TN2H44SMF or 8TN2H44SMZ. Ops 150.8-162mc, with four xtal control channels,& an output power of 2.2 watts. For other possible parameters see PRC-94. Original US Navy & Marine Corps cost $935-$1240.00. NSN 5820-00-110-5722. Ref.#28,#30 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- PRC-94V3; The commercial equivalents for this PRC-94 variant are COMCO 810-156-01,& RCA 8TN1H44S. Ops 132-150.6mc, with four xtal control channels, & an output power of 2.2 watts. For other possible parameters see PRC-94. Original US Navy & Dep.of Defence cost $1790.00. NSN 5820-01-012-2771. Ref.#28,#30 Note the many versions of this radio, they differ mainly in channel capacity, and frequency split. And that even though a higher power option was then available(4 watts) the military still opted for the lower powered 2 watt version. The PRC-94 is basicaly the PRC-91A with some updated options, these include extended channel capacity, optional switchable low power(even with the low power radios), tone squelch, and a jack for a speaker/mic. In addition, the battery adapter/built in charger has been done away with, making for a much smaller radio set, and allowing for far more versatility in battery, and charger combinations. Case parts, battery, antennas, and most if not all internal modules are still compatable with the earlier version. The PRC-94 is extremely common, and has seen very wide spread use with just about all government agencies. Saddly though, I have never seen one with a military data plate. Even though I own several, and have seen hundreds of these radios come from military service. The one I use has ingraved on the front panel,"PROPERTY OF THE U.S. COAST GUARD", in large block letters just under the speaker. This is a five channel, two watt version, with high and low power option, and speaker/mic jack. All five channels where on the VHF Marine band(I still have a BUNCH of extra xtals for these). They used as standard a 1/4 wave telescoping antenna, but a 6" rubber type is also known to have been used. Their method of low power operation deserves some comment, those radios with this option, have two PTT switches. One for low power(one watt in this case), the other for high(2.2 watts). The low power PTT switch is a small round one just under the regular PTT bar. All the PRC-91, and 94's were extremely rugged, and water tight provided the case gaskeys were all in place and not damaged. They remained in military service at least until the mid 1980's. And though they are found in civilian life, this is not very common as they were a very expensive radio. They also built a lowband, and a portable/mobile/base version capable of 8 or 20 watts output, but these have not been found in military service, yet! *********************************************** MEMBERS WRITE; On the State of the Commercial Invitations, and Limitied Membership: #Dennis, Seems like a fine idea to me. With the position DRMO is taking for the destruction of mil com gear, things are going to get tighter, at least for more contemporary sets (though I do understand that they destroyed a lot of R-390As recently, too, and have heard of other 50s era stuff ground up as well). An opening for selected dealers might be mutually beneficial. 73 Joseph W Pinner #Good ideas. It will be really good to know what sort of stuff dealers have in stock. (Many of them are actually collectors -- just like us, but need the commercial image as a cover and justification. Of course some of them are just gready jerks, especially a couple of the Japanese ones I know. Still, they seem to get a lot of good stuff.) George Wallner George, I have found the reverse to be true, dealers masquerading as collectors, and I most apose this practice. But they would have little if any application with us. Dennis # I dunno about that... I've been putting a lot of effort into curbing the increasing flood of unsolicited commercial email ("spam") into my account. Even if it's your intention to only let reputable dealers in, once one jerk slips through, all of the list subscribers will be on yet another spam mailing list. I don't want my member profile released to any commercial folks because I'm pretty sick of being flooded with targeted marketing crap. I wouldn't be opposed to discussions by group members of good and bad dealers, referrals, etc., but I think it would be dangerous to let even one of the dealers into the group as a member. Mark J. Blair Mark, You make a very good point about the SPAMing, and I have amended the invitation, and rules as a result. This has in fact happened here in the past, though not by a dealer, but an ex-member, ala Ben Nock. I do not think that it would at all be a problem, as I've stressed repeatedly, only REPUTABLE COMMERCIAL dealer would be offered a Limited Membership. I personally do not suffer from SPAMing, most likely because my current server is the worlds biggest provider of this plague. I've also thought better of making available your member profiles. But I do think it prudent that we allow a prospective dealer who is extending a special purchase price to a member, to insure that his customer is indeed a member. But this can simply be done by providing me with the customers name and email address. I think some of you might have missed one point in regard the "On the Commercial Front" column. Not only would there be adds, and specials provided via member-dealers, rather any non-member source for equipment might be put here by a member. For instance, I get numerous messages, letters, and phone calls from people wishing to sell something because of my many Want adds running in various publications. Most of them I'm not interested in, but I could pass this info on to the group via this column. Another would be a local Ham/Friend that is house cleaning, his excess junk could also be posted. Dennis # Hi Dennis, Your invite to commercial dealers looks fine, however do you think we should forbid them from buying stuff off members? ed) alright by me, but the smart collector would insist on a trade. BTW, my TRC-77 is now on the air and working beautifully. Version 1 of my home page is up and running. The address is http://www.users.bigpond.com/shill I plan to add a lot more to it as soon as I get a chance. Cheers Steve Hill VK4CZT 39 Banbury St. Carina. 4152. Brisbane. Australia. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Next Mystery Radio: # I would love to learn more about the GRC-14. As I told you earlier, I have an R-808. Also, I now have an original Navships manual. But I know little about the set, especially its history. 73 Joseph W Pinner Sorry Joe, But I know absolutly nothing about the GRC-14, or it's little brother the GRC-13. Not even enough to come up with some coherent questions about it. They would however be a very good subject Mystery Radio. Maybe one of our group will tackle this one? Dennis # I'd love to see some first-hand accounts of what it was like to use the PRC-10 and similar sets. Once I tried strapping on one of my -10's in its backpack harness. It took about an hour to get all the straps just right, and I'd sure hate to be dodging bullets with that thing strapped on my back. I feel sorry for the poor grunts who had to lug them around! Mark J. Blair Mark, While the PRC-10 is a good topic for a feature article, especially as this much maligned little radio did contribute much to history. It's not as a Mystery Radio as we know about everything there is to know about it. Dennis # I would still be interested to know if you came up with anything regarding the ART-31 as successor to CRT-3. Danny Cahn Again, I know nothing about this radio, unlike the GRC-13/14 which most people know about and would make a viable subject as a Mystery Radio. There's a good chance the ART-31 was only produced in a limited simi-experimental volume, especially as the CRT-3 was still in widespread use until the demise of 500kc Marine distress in the mid 80's. The biggest dis qualifier of the ART-31 is the fact that it is not generally known. Remember, our Mystery Radios are those that most people either know something about, or have heard of, but there is some unexplained unknowns about it. These are new old stock units most still in original packaging, several contract dates from 1968 to 1980's. They include cord CD-201A with PJ-055B connector. The member price is $20.00ea, plus shipping. ed) except for the cord, the J-45 is identical to the KY-? used with the latter model equipment like the GRC-106. AS-2975, PRC-70 dipole antenna kit. Unused Similar to that use with the PRC-74 differing mainly in the balun it uses. The member price is $25.00ea, plus shipping ed) as the freq range of the PRC-70 is 2-79mc, and it's output 50ohms, these antennas should be good for just about any portable radio application. Quoted prices are good to group members only. To place an order contact Steve Haney at ed) I've known Steve for several years, and have conducted numerous transactions, including trades, with him. You can deal with him in total confidence. The prices he has quoted us are well under that you'd expect to pay elsewhere, even at a hamfest, especially that of the J-45's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Buyer beware!
