MILITARY COLLECTOR GROUP POST, April 17/98 INDEX: ANNOUNCEMENTS; MEMBERS WRITE; NEW MEMBERS; Glenn, Shep Shepard, Hal Blaisdell, Adrian Heinrich, Kim Campbell MORE SPRING CLEANING; HUMOR; *********************************************** ANNOUNCEMENTS; Between the weather, my shipping/house cleaning, and having the motor for my old Power Wagon out on the ground. The group post has suffered this last week, sorry. I've been covered from head to toe with grease for three days now, makes it a bit hard to peck on this computers keyboard when it sticks to my fingers. To those that have been worried about me, thanks. The last group post went out on the 10th, and there was no Group Wants and Trades posted last Sunday. The latter because there were no modifications and as such would have been dumb to send it. It will go out this Sunday on schedule so have your additions, or modifications ready by Saturday night. There probably won't be a Group post Saturday either, as Ike and me will be at the Joplin Mo. hamfest. For those within travel distance, and will also be attending, will see ya there. Ike and me will also be at the Little Rock Arkansas hamfest the weekend of the 25th, and at the Oklahoma City hamfest the weekend of the 25th July. The sponsors of these two events have donated four tables for me to put on a display of equipment dating from 1935 to present. If at all possible you should try to attend the Little Rock fest, this because I will have on display for the last time, much of my clandestine equipment dating from 1942 to 1972. While it would be nice if I could travel the country putting these particular radios on display, it's just too dangerous, as some of these rank among the rarest examples in the world. Dennis *********************************************** MEMBERS WRITE; DENNIS: Please RESEND the Post, April 10/98 I DOES not appear to have arrived for me. P.S. Today is my 59th Birthday. Anybody wishing to send a Birthday Present of a Mike for the PRC-64, Can. ! Pat Lombardi PasqualeNJ@AOL.com ed) my birthday is the 1st of October, I tell ya all this so's ta give ya plenty of time! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hey Y'all- I successfully upgraded to General Class at the Montgomery VEC Monday, 13 April. I'm one happy dude! Sam Timberlake, KF4TXQ/AG stimber@lakemartin.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Dennis; Nice job on the Korean War radio dating. I learned a few things. Does the same hold true for the R/T-66 to 68 series of radios? it seems like I have a few manuals from that group dated 1951. Hope I'm not jumping the gun on the next installment. Thanks for the address for W7FG, I sent the list to him to see if he wants them. Kevin Hough KG0QE Farmington, MN. KG0QE@juno.com ed) The RT-68 family will fall in closely with the RT-70, so I won't single them out. In fact the only two radios to be included in the series will be the RT-70, and the GRC-9. This because they represent two opposite ends of the controversy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank You Dennis!!! I got one COMCAL transceiver from RACAL. Now I'm looking for the handset and/or handset-connectors (6 pins) Do You know a source ? chris ed) Chris, several of our members are looking for this same connector, though I have some around here, my projected date for finding them is around 2001. They are a standard Cannon 6 pin connector, MSS311GF10-GP, or Amphenol (right angle) 62GB-56T10-6P(004) *********************************************** NEW MEMBERS; Glenn, Shep Shepard, Hal Blaisdell, Adrian Heinrich, Kim Campbell I accept your invitation and conditions of the group, count me in. My name is Glenn and I am an engineer for NEC in Los angeles.I support PBX phone systems. I was a 31 Victor in the Army 77-80 so I worked with some of the stuff I collect. I am a hobbyist, not a speculator for profit! I cant stand seeing profiteers inflate the prices for us.I will help any way I can. Thanks,Glenn. Glenn.Anderson@turner.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Dennis: Thank you for the invitation to join your military collectors group. Yes, I would like to join and will abide by the rules of the Group. Please enroll me manually or send me "subscribe" instructions. Thank You. Shep Shepard AA7MH/K7HS shep@northlink.com Currently restoring a 1957 UNIMOG Radio Truck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis, Sound Ok. 1. I agree to the terms and conditions of the group. 2. I am a Vietnam Veteran and served in the US Army for a period of 6 years active duty, all in the Infantry(1965-1971) .I've been collecting signal equipment for about ten years and have a small collection of Military Radio Sets. I also collect Military Vehicles and all are configured with the proper radio sets (equipment)... M151 Jeep Set up as a Battalion Command Vehicle as mine in 1968 Vietnam. A WC-1 Weapons Carrier set up as a WWII, Tank Destroyer Vehicle with operational Radio sets. (Of course along with these two major interest I have amassed a huge quantity of "other" items... Helmets, uniforms, manuals, etc.....). Signal Equipment continues to be my passion and quest....... Hal Blaisdell torchboots@email.msn.com ed) I'm most envious! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Dennis, I am more than happy to comply with the conditions of participation in your network. As a member of the Historical Radio of Australia in Melbourne, Victoria, I collect radios and memoribilia ranging from broadcast receivers to some military items. My military interest is more recent and stems mainly from my Royal Australian Air Force service (20+years) as a Radio Technician (Air); during this time I worked on SP2H Neptune and P3B Orion Anti-submarine (ASW) aircraft and the P3B Weapon Systems Trainer (Training Device 2F69C); I recently acquired a CRT3 Gibson Girl out of nostalgia, for I used to perform periodic servicings on them with the Neptunes - I spent a considerable time hunting the World for an original Boxkite to complete the package, and found one in Australia. Avionics equipment I worked on included comms, navigation aids, radar, Electronic Surveillance Measures (ESM), and ASW. Trust this information is sufficient. Regards, Adrian Heinrich adrian_heinrich@hotmail.com I am currently in flight simulator maintenance for Ansett Australia Airlines (10years) where we operate Boeing 737 and 767, Airbus A320, British Aerospace BAe146 Full Flight Simulators on a 24hr basis. ed) I also worked on, and used the CRT-3. It took four able bodied seamen ta get it back in it's bag with all it's associated paraphernalia! Was kinda like one of those 75 man rubber rafts that were contained, along with emergency provisions and equipment in a fiberglass container the size of a 55 gallon drum, they were never meant to be put pack, once deployed! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll join your group however I don't know how much I can contribute as I'm fairly new to this. However I'll do what I can. As far as interest... well I'm interested in mostly tactical millitary commo gear. Korean War era or newer. Also intelligence eqiupment. Don't really have any specific wants other than I'm looking for an AN/PRC64A. Thats about it. 73 and I look foward to hearing from you. Kim Campbell, WB4LZQ wb4lzq@atl.mindspring.com ed) don't worry about any lack of experiance, we'll all fix that. *********************************************** MORE SPRING CLEANING; Spring cleaning is coming along nicely. Who would have thought there were so many suckers, err aaaaa, enthusiast out here with such diverse interest. This weeks goal is ta get enough debris out of here so as to allow me ta park the van in the drive way. This is still no easy chore, as I have a horse shoe drive that's 200 feet long. What can I say, he was a Navy lifer that re-upped twice for Adak Alaska, you decide! Anyway, we had ta get in the old bus ta get it out. Took us an hour ta clear a path, another hour ta regain composure from stretched muscles, and bruised shins/elbows/stubbed toes, and other general/minor wounds, no blood just yet. Then we got to the door of the bus! Once inside the real dangerous part started! Who would have thought that in a 30plus year stint in the military, that the first time yer life might be in jeopardy is when ya go ta rescue a BC-779 from an old school bus in Cross Timbers Missouri? Then we had ta find the manual, that was in the old mobile home. I got a building out back I ain't been in in a couple years, it's just too scary! Ya think I'm exageratin? Ya think this is all bull shit? I got witnesses, I'll give ya their addresses! HELPPPPP! I might add that Bob lives in a nicely restored 60 year old house with wood floors. Due too several trips to my place in the last few months, these floors have now reached their maximum weight capacity, concrete is in the plans for any future additions, also a larger truck is on his agenda, or mine anyway. Dennis Starks; MILITARY RADIO COLLECTOR/HISTORIAN military-radio-guy@juno.com *********************************************** HUMOR; A young man is wandering, lost, in a forest when he comes upon a small house. Knocking on the door he is greeted by an ancient Chinese man with a long gray beard. "I'm lost," said the man. "Can you put me up for the night?" "Certainly," the Chinese man said, "but on one condition. If you so much as lay a finger on my daughter I will inflict upon you the three worst Chinese tortures known to man." "OK," said the man, thinking that the daughter must be pretty old as well, and entered the house. Over dinner the daughter came down the stairs. She was young, beautiful and had a fantastic body. She was obviously attracted to the young man as she couldn't keep her eyes off him during the meal. Remembering the old man's warning he ignored her and went up to bed alone. During the night he could bear it no longer and snuck into her room for a night of passion. He was careful to keep everything quiet so the old man wouldn't hear and, near dawn, he crept back to his room, exhausted but happy. He woke to feel a pressure on his chest. Opening his eyes he saw a large rock on his chest with a note on it that read, "Chinese Torture 1: Large rock on chest." "Well, that's pretty crappy," he thought. "If that's the best the old man can do then I don't have much to worry about." He picked the boulder up, walked over to the window and threw the boulder out. As he did so, he noticed another note on it that read "Chinese Torture 2: Rock tied to left testicle." In a panic he glanced down and saw the rope that was already getting close to taut. Figuring that a few broken bones was better than castration he jumped out of the window after the boulder. As he plummeted towards the ground he saw a large sign on the ground that read, "Chinese Torture 3: Right testicle tied to bed post." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- San Francisco: A man, wanting to rob a downtown Bank of America, walked into the branch and wrote, "This iz a stikkup. Put all your muny in this bag." While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, the man began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller window. So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street to the Wells Fargo Bank. After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his note to the Wells Fargo teller. She read it and, surmising from his spelling errors that he was not the brightest light in the harbour, told him she could not accept his stick-up note because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip, and he would either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank of America. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said "OK" and left. The Wells Fargo teller then called the police, who arrested the man a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at Bank of America. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Tennessee: A man successfully broke into a bank after hours and stole the bank's video camera, while the camera was remotely recording. (That is, the videotape recorder was located elsewhere in the bank, so he didn't get the videotape of himself stealing the camera). ------------------------------------------------------------------ Louisiana: A man walked into a Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the counter and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer? Fifteen dollars. [If someone points a gun at you and gives you money, was a crime committed?] ------------------------------------------------------------------ Arkansas: Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinder block bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. Seems the liquor store window was made of Plexi-Glass. The whole event was caught on videotape. ------------------------------------------------------------------ New York: As a female shopper exited a convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police had apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, "Yes Officer..that's her. That's the lady I stole the purse from." ------------------------------------------------------------------- Ann Arbor:The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 12:50am, flashed a gun and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Kentucky: Two men tried to pull the front off a cash machine by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front panel off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off their truck. Scared, they left the scene and drove home. With the chain still attached to the machine. With their bumper still attached to the chain. With their vehicle's license plate still attached to the bumper. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Florida: A thief burst into the bank one day wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. Aiming his gun at the guard, the thief yelled, "FREEZE, MOTHER-STICKERS, THIS IS A F----UP!" For a moment, everyone was silent. Then the snickers started. The guard completely lost it and doubled over laughing. It probably saved his life, because he'd been about to draw his gun. He couldn't have drawn and fired before the thief got him. The thief ran away and is still at large. In memory of the event, the bank later put a plaque on the wall engraved "Freeze, mother-stickers, this is a f----up!" *********************************************** (The preceding was a product of the"Military Collector Group Post", an international email magazine dedicated to the preservation of history and the equipment that made it.
