Multi-Meter Quality & RF, HUMOR; *********************************************** ANNOUNCEMENTS; Motorola Article, Myself & Jim Hopper are currently compiling data on the Motorola MX-S & R series programmable radios. These were built in various forms including Draggie Talkies, Handie Talkies(numerous versions), and even as brief case repeater systems. Some included voice encryption, some not. All were used extensively by numerous military and government organizations in various capacities. If you have any info on the use of any of these types in military/government service, please let us know. Also if you have any questions you'd like answered let us know. Eventually all this data, along with technical and programming info, and maybe even a programming service will be included as an article in a future Group Post. Group Want/Trades, Paper Trail, None of the previously posted entries from past Paper Trail or Group Wants/Trades will be included in this weekends editions. We'll be starting fresh, so get yours in by Friday night. If your unsure if you post is current, let me know & I'll send you last week's for your review. Thanks Dennis *********************************************** TECHNICAL INTELLIGENCE MUSEUM WEB SITE; from Bill Howard Introducing the William L. Howard Ordnance Technical Intelligence Museum Web Site. I have been able to set up a web site, titled: THE WILLIAM L. HOWARD ORDNANCE TECHNICAL INTELLIGENCE MUSEUM. It is dedicated to the subject of Technical Intelligence. The main section contains a short history of Technical Intelligence from WW II to the present. There are links to several other articles on the History of Technical Intelligence which I wrote for the Remembering Project.. Eventually there will be a link to the History of Technical Intelligence in the European Theater. There are links to other sites which contain pictures of various items of Foreign Material. Mostly tanks, rockets and WW 2 weapons, there are links to several sites that show modern Russian/USSR combat vehicles. There are also links to several sites that have pictures of Foreign Radios. Then there is a tour which takes you on a brief tour of the museum. For further information on the museum, the artifacts or technical intelligence, please contact me. The URL for the site is: : http://home1.gte.net/wlhoward/index.htm Bill Howard ed) special note, the official name of Bill's museum was changed several years ago to include his name at the front to avoid confusion with another museum(I think in Texas) having the same or a similar name. Though he can be a pompous ass at times, and comments have been made that the name of his museum reflects this, this is absolutely not the case! This time. *********************************************** RAY'S ART-13 PROJECT; The ART-13 project: Ok, got the transmitter working and have found the following problems. have not determine if they are problems with this radio or problems with the ART-13 family in general. 1 output impedance, I think it was built to match a antenna impedance of 200 to 1000 ohms, about the length of 40 to 60 ft of wire on a aircraft. have had problems getting good match into 50 ohm load. can get 75 watts or so but no good plate dip and am at end of coupling cap ( min cap). 2 harmonic output / tvi At 3.75 the 7.5 second harmonic was only 20 DB down, the 11.25 was only 40 DB down, the 15.0 was about 50 DB down. More alarming were products out in the 50 to 70Mhz range that were only 20 DB down, this radio is in hard up need of a tvi filter, the weird output impedance affects this. 3 28volt power supply I have bin running the radio on a 28 volt 5 A switching supply, last night after having the radio key down after about five min ( was checking spurious ) the switching supply exploded. have not determine if it was because I was drawing 150% output from it or if RF got back into it . have put lots of de- coupling caps on all the lines from the radio, across the back terminal strip, if not tons of RF leak out the B+ and high voltage line. have a different 28 volt supply that I will try tonight. This is the big question ?? should I rebuild the output tank to make it more 50 ohm friendly ( then have it feed via coax a tvi filter ) ? also feel that most of the harmonic problems stem from the two 1625 that are the hart of the frequency multipliers. think they are driven two hard and are not the best choice for this. may consider a whole new VFO driver subsystem that will only work on 40 / 80 possibly 160 too. by re working the output tank this can be done. don't know what I will do with the rotating coil thing but wood like to have a capacitor for plate tuning. I can see how in the forties and fifties this wood have bin a good radio for the time, the output tuning is so broad and flat its hard not to get some output no mater how badly tuned, the use of all the 1625 provided a common tube used in a simple circuit that provided lots of coverage thru use of a fixed VFO. Setting the operating frequency not as hard as it appears, I just spot it on a receiver. will probley remove the internal calibrator deck. as have not figured out how it works. I am thinking of going ahead with all the modifications to the radio with special attention not to change the external appearance. let me know what you think. Have not started with the modulator yet. Will send a copy of this to Stark, maybe he will post it so everyone can let me know what I am doing wrong. Ray Fantini ed) I don't have a lot of experience working on an ART-13. Though I've had about 10 of them in my life all worked without doing anything other than replaceing a tube(provided some Ham had not been in it dicking around). But here's my two cents. Antenna Output, The ART-13 was designed to load directly into an aircraft antenna of 20-60ft, or a fixed antenna of 13-65ft, between the freqs of 3-18mc. Dependant on the position of the 'C' control the output is operating as an L network(pos 1-7 & 13), or as a Pi network(pos 8-12). As can be seen, the antenna impedance that can be tuned is from the very low, to the moderately high, so there is absolutely no need to modify the output circuits. Because of this wide frequency coverage & impedance flexibility, it is very possible(and common) to tune the PA at a harmonic of the desired frequency(especially on the 40 & 80mtr bands). This may well be what you have done, and the symptoms you describe support this possibility. For use on aircraft antennas between 20 & 60ft, a shunt capacitor was supplied(CU-24/ART-13). This is a three stage capacitor of 25, 50 & 75pf and was used between 2-4mc. For use with antennas 150ft long, an Antenna loading coil(CU-26/ART) was used. There was also available a long list of external antenna accessories for operation in the LF/MF with various lengths of antennas. Power Supply, The use of any switching type power supply with communications equipment is a no-no! As a constructive comment;... some of the entries in the wants and trades and paper trail have been so long that they're growing whiskers.... mine included. How about a two or three week exposure and after that ' fini'. Anyone wanting a repeat resubmits. Pete Williams ed) I agree completely, and have received a couple other similar comments. The maximum size of those post were reached some time ago. I've already abbreviated everything as much as possible. I've found in the past that the only way to get everybody to update their entry is to just delete all and start over again. So that's what we're gonna do. Everybody get your Paper Trail, and Group Want's/Trade's material updated and sent to me by Friday night or it will not be included Saturday & Sunday. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Multi-Meter Quality & RF, Randy, Regarding your weird current reading with the PRC-66: I suspect that there is RF in the battery circuit, and it is messing with your meter. I recently had this problem with a PRT-4: running it from a bench supply with analog meters, when I keyed the PRT, the P.S. meter said that the output voltage was dropping - but it's a regulated supply, and the current reading was not changing. Pete ed) I have found many times, that when using multi-meters of a lesser quality(Radio Shack brands are notorious!) they will go nuts in an RF rich environment. This regardless of whether they are analog or digital, and is no doubt because of the metal film & wire wound resistors they commonly use in their divider(ranges), each acting like a miniature antenna. Sorrily, this affliction is no longer limited to lower quality equipment. It would appear that all the manufacturers of this stuff assume we are going to be using their equipment in/on computers or automobiles. All the test equipment used in my shop is military surplus, and while they may not depict the state of the art, nor always offer the most advantageous ranges, none suffer from undue sensitivity to RF. A case in point(and good test), A friend of mine several years ago found, and planned to by a really impressive looking DVM at a hamfest, it was as usual a Radio Shack brand. I told him "you don't want that", he said "why not, it's like new, only $10.00", I said "watch" turned the meter on and key'd down a PRT-4 about 5" from it, the meter went nuts without even being connected to anything(it didn't even have leads attached to it). Try this test with your HT the next time you go to buy a multi-meter, with & without leads attached and on all it's ranges. *********************************************** HUMOR; A young boy went up to his father and asked, "What is the difference between potentially and realistically?" The father answered, " Go ask your mother if she would sleep with Robert Redford for a million dollars. Also, ask your sister if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars. Come back and tell me what you have learned." So the boy went to his mother and said, "Would you sleep with Robert Redford for a million dollars?" The mother replied, "Of course I would!! I wouldn't pass up an opportunity like that." The boy then went to his sister and said," Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?" The girl replied, "Oh my God! I would just love to do that! I would be nuts to pass up that opportunity!!" The boy then thought about it for two or three days and went back to his dad. His father asked him, "Did you find out the difference between potential and realistic?" The boy replied, "Yes, potentially we're sitting on two million dollars, but realistically we're living with two sluts." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What a World! *Only in America -- are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink… *Only in America -- can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance… *Only in America -- do banks leave both doors open, then chain pens to the counters… *Only in America -- do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions… *Only in America -- do people order double cheeseburgers, a large fry, and a diet coke… *Only in America -- do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight… *Only in America -- do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and leave useless junk in the garage… *Only in America -- do we use answering machines to screen calls, then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place… *Only in America -- do we use the word "politics" to describe the process so well: "Poli" in Latin meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "bloodsucking creatures"… ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A guy out on the golf course takes an errant shot right in the crotch. Writhing in agony, he falls to the ground. As soon as he can manage, he gets to the doctor. He said "How bad is it doc? I'm going on my honeymoon next week and my fiance is still a virgin in every way." The doctor told him, "I'll have to put your penis in a splint to let it heal and keep it straight. It should be okay next week." So he took four tongue depressors and formed a neat little 4-sided bandage, and wired it all together; an impressive work of art. The guy mentions none of this to his girl, marries and they go on their honeymoon. That night in the motel room she rips open her blouse to reveal a gorgeous chest This was the first time he had seen them. She said, "You're the first, no one has ever touched these breasts." He whips down his pants and says, "Look at this, it's still in the CRATE!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A woman wants the inside of her house painted and she calls a contractor in to help her. They wander around the house, and she points out the colors she wants. She says, "Now, in the living room, I'd like to have a neutral beige, very soft and warm." The contractor nods, pulls out his pad of paper and writes on it. Then he goes to the window, leans out and yells, "Green side up!" The woman is most perplexed but she lets it slide. They wander into the next room. She says, "In the dining room I'd like a light white, not stark, but very bright and airy." The contractor nods, pulls out his pad of paper and writes on it. Then he goes to the window, leans out, and yells "Green side up"! The woman is even more perplexed but still lets it slide. They wander further into the next room. She says, "In the bedroom, I'd like blue. Restful, peaceful, cool blue." The contractor nods, pulls out his pad of paper and writes on it. Then once more he goes to the window, leans out and yells "Green side up"! This is too much. The woman has to ask. So she says, "Every time I tell you a color, you write it down, but then you yell out the window 'Green side up.' What on earth does that mean?" The contractor shakes his head and says, "I have four blondes laying sod across the street." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remember its not "How high are you?", its "Hi, how are you!"
